paru-paro
“My weavings combine the handicrafts of native artisans around the world with a bold creative sensibility. I incorporate common and non-traditional materials, which bring an element of surprise and discovery. I also experiment with unexpected color combinations that appeal to the senses. These juxtapositions of textures and colors result in exciting and dynamic compositions, transforming the domestic craft of weaving into fine art.”
Reynan Punzalan was born in the Philippines and moved to the Bronx at the age of four. He specializes in colorful weavings that combine traditional and unexpected materials. As an avid traveler and native New Yorker, he is inspired not only by the local crafts of skilled textile and basket weavers from around the world, but also by the dynamic and bold fashion scene of the city. His work is a celebration of rich textures and vibrant colors that simultaneously pay homage to both primitive and contemporary art.Â
Reynan earned his BA in Studio Art from Vassar College with a focus on sculpture.  He studied at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation spending two semesters in Paris studying architecture, art, and French. Professionally, he has worked at Knoll for fifteen years helping to further sharpen his eye for beautiful design.
His work has been exhibited in Knoll Showrooms in New York City and also at WallWorks NY in the Bronx.Â
